This song–Duibuqi, Wo de Zhongwen Buhao《對不起，我的中文不好》–is written by a British band called, Transition 前进乐团. They composed this simple and humorous Chinese song based on their experience in Taiwan.

They have created quite a few Chinese songs: 前进乐团Transition‘s songs. I like this one in particular. It is a great song to learn for the beginning Chinese learners. To get the humor of this song, you need to be able to distinguish these two sets of vocabularies: 1) 吃 chī (eat) and 去 qù (go), 2) 睡觉 shuìjiào (sleep) and 水饺 shuǐjiǎo (dumpling). If pronounced with a wrong tone or wrong pronunciation, the word can convey a meaning that is not intended by the speaker! You can confuse a native speaker if you mix them up!

wǒ yào chī shuǐ jiǎo wǒ yào qù shuì jiào

我要吃水饺。我要去睡觉。

I want to eat dumplings. I want to go to sleep.

Note the differences between these two sentences now? Do you note the differences between 吃 chī and 去qù and the distinction between 睡觉 shuìjiào and 水饺 shuǐjiǎo? As the cook in the Youtube video suggests, if you mix 水饺”shuǐ jiǎo ” with 睡觉”shuì jiào,” you will “make a fool of yourself” (闹笑话[nào xiào huà]).
