1. Final Exam: Wednesday, May 20th (5th-7th period)

The written final exam will begin at 12:50 and end at 1:40 , and oral exam will begin right after the written test.  A movie will be shown, while the instructor conducts an oral interview with students one at a time.

2. Retun your textbook and workbooks in the beginning of the final exam.

Please make sure to return all three books (one textbook and two workbooks) to the instructor in the beginning of the final exam.

3. Please remember to bring your notebook for your participation grade.

4. Please bring some snacks to share with your classmates

I will bring some drinks for everyone.

On Wednesday, I asked students to translate the following sentences:

1. What day of the week is tody?

2. What date is today?

3. How old are you?

4. When is your birthday?

Each individual learned to say the following questions and how to answer them:

1. 今天是星期几?

2. 今天是几月几号?

3. 你今年多大?

4. 你的生日是几月几号?

We also went over the dialogue 1 of Lesson 3 in the textbook.

We postponed the vocabulary & character quizzes to today.

I have not received the following HW: Workbook L2D2 from the following students:

Dejaun, Samuel, Melitine, Ethan, Tessa, and  Jesse. This HW is worth 200 points. The last day you can turn it in is this Thursday. You will get a reduced grade for the late HW, but it would be better than losing the entire 200 points. Make sure you take time to write it with care. I do give a letter grade for the assignments from the Workbook. Please go on line to check if there are any mistakes in the grades recorded in jupitered.com. If you think there is an error, please bring your HW  that was not correctly recorded to me as a proof.

Today I collected the Workbook HW on Lesson 2. If you haven’t turned it in today, please make sure you turn it in as soon as possible. One day late, the grade will be reduced by one grade. Two days late, it will be reduced by 20%, and so on. From now on you must turn in all homework at the beginning of class. Any work that is not turned in when the teacher is collecting will be considered as being “late.” No HW should be done during the class. I also reserve the right not to accept your HW when it is turned in too late. Please understand this policy is simply an effort to help you stay on track and get the most out of your learning experience.

We also took a test on L2 today.

No homework due tomorrow. We will study Lesson 3 D1. Please find time to study L3D1’s vocabulary.

Thank you so much for participating in the Chinese New Year Celebration. Food is great! And your performances last night were wonderful. I hope you have all enjoyed the process of learning new songs, tongue twisters, poems, and riddles.

On Monday, please make sure you have completed all the following and have turned in all the following:

1. the take-home test on L1: Test on Integrated Chinese Lesson 1_new (Remember this is a close-book test. After taking the test, please correct yourself with a different color pen. If you correct your own mistakes, I will give you partial credits back).

2. Please finish all the vocabulary sheets for the songs you have learned.

3. Please complete the quizzes for the song. It is open-book quizzes. However, I suggested that you study first before you take the quizzes. Again, after you take the quizzes, correct yourself with a different color pen.

3. HW on L1D2 should be completed and turned in no later than Monday.

Please bring your books on Monday. We will begin our new lesson. Have a nice weekend!

Hi everyone, 大家好!

It has been quite a few days since we had our last class on Wednesday. I hope you have all rested up over the past few days.

I have entered all your grades in the Jupitar now.

As a reminder:

1. the take-home test on L1 is due when we meet. (It is not an open-book test. I trust you will all be honest. You can take as long as it takes, but you can’t open the book.) After you complete it, you may get a different color pen and look up the answers in the textbook and correct and grade yourself. I will give you some credits for the corrections.

2. Please finish workbook L1D2 p.24-27. (due next time we meet).

3. Learn these two New Year songs:

A Chinese Song: 《新年好呀新年好呀》(xīnnián hǎo ya, xīnnián hǎo ya !Happy New Year!) (Please write the vocabulary two lines for each, vocabulary list in the post) Due next time we meet. (I announced this in our last Wednesday class).

4. A Chinese Song: A New Year Song(新年歌 恭喜恭喜 Xinnian Ge Congratulations!)(Learn this song as well, know the meaning of the song, and please write the vocabulary one line each, due on next Monday).

5. Next Monday: I will quiz you on these two songs: translation and vocabulary–I will quiz you on the recognition of characters and its English meanings.

4) We began to learn how to sing the Chinese song “Tonghua (Fairy Tale)” .

We made a big announcement on the celebration of Chinese new year and how we will participate in the performance of this event.

I gave a quiz on L1D1. we also learned to sing “Xin Nian Ge” (New Year Song).

Some of you have not done the HW I (L1D1) have mentioned last weekend. Those who did not do won’t receive a grade for this one. Please make sure to turn in on time. I am reiterating here. The HW must be completed by the due date.

I urged you to at least spend 30 minutes every day on Chinese. Please use the flashcards to learn how to recognize Chinese characters and how to write them.

Tomorrow we will have a quiz on Pinyin and learn new vocabulary on L1 D2.

Today we went over the radicals before giving the quiz on radicals (p.1-p.7) We also listened one video on Pinyin song and practices some sounds in Chinese Pinyin.

I gave out the flashcards for the radicals (p.1 to p.7) for your use.

Quiz on Pinyin on Monday (Jan 26)

HW on Workbook Introduction (should be completed by Monday)–Use this to prepare for the quiz on Pinyin. Please go to the heading above–click on “Audios to Integrated Chinese”: Scroll down to “the Workbook Introduction” to do the HW on Workbook–Introduction, use this exercise to practice Pinyin. I have given most of you the keys to this HW. Listen, answer, and check the answers after you finish each section. Listen again on the ones you have mistakes.

If you have time, you can listen to the audio mp3 to the Introduction (Pinyin) on Textbook as well.

Try to practice pinyin as much as possible.  You can also use the videos and websites on four tones and pinyin to prepare for the quiz.

Today we finished the Lesson 4 and the entire booklet on Progressive Chinese, focusing on the pronunciation of Ji, qi, xi, zhi, chi, shi, ri.

Quiz on Jan 23 (Friday): Radicals on Character Workbook p. 1 to p7,  focusing on the English meaning of each radical.

Jan 20, 2015 (Tues)

We had a quiz on four tones today. We covered a bit on Ji, qi, xi, zhi, chi, shi, ri.  I also checked HW on radicals p. 1 to p. 7.

HW due Jan 21 (Weds): charcters on Ji, qi, xi, zhi, chi, shi, ri, etc. (Voc. on Lesson 4, Progressive Chinese).  Write at least one line for each character/vocabulary.

Use videos and recommended websites to learn about Pinyin and four tones.

Today I  checked over all the common/classroom expressions worksheets.

1) Begin with 6 bell questions (to be included in your notebook)

2) Today we have gone over the “progressive Chinese” handout and finish Exercise 3-1.

3) We also begin our lesson “Progressive Chinese” handout on the initial sounds: ji, qi, xi, zhi, shi, ri, zi…

On Tues (1/20):

1. HW: Character workbook p.1-P7 (radicals) due

2. A short Quiz on four tones.  View the videos on four tones.

Today we have go over Ma1-Ma2,-Ma3-Ma4 package (We have finished Lesson 3, except for the exercise 3-1

HW due((Friday 16): all the handouts I have given  (see below) on common/classroom expressions should all be completed.

****Radicals in characterworkbook (p. 1- 7) will be due on Tues (Jan 20), please write it on the blank grid sheets that I gave you before (or you can go to the “worksheets” and print our from there. Don’t write on the book. You should not make any marks on all the books lent to you by the school.

The quiz will be postponed to our next session.

Sorry I am sick today and could not come to school.  Please use the class time to finish up all those worksheets (see below links). Next session we will master the four tones–our goal is to speak like a native and work on more difficult initials. Watch youtube videos on Pinyin and four tones. You ultimate goal is to aim to pronounce like a native as much as possible.

Before class watch videos on four tones and if you have time, (on the heading above), go to search by lesson, select “introduction” to watch the videos related to what are learning now.

It was so nice seeing all of you today. I am so pleased to have you as my students this semester. If you are dedicated to learning, I promise I will do my best to help you learn the Chinese language. It is not only great for your intellectual development, but also a wonderful way to expand your cultural understanding of a country that has a rich cultural heritage.
