We announced the Scholarship Opportunities. Please apply as soon as possible. The deadline is approaching: 

  1. NSLI-Y Application deadline: October 30th: National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLIY) ages 15-18 for summer 2019 or AY 19-20.  NSLIY is a U.S. State Department foreign language program in which selected students study a language such as Chinese or Korean overseas for a summer, semester, or school year. See http://www.nsliforyouth.org/ for details.
  2. SPICE (Stanford Program on International and Cross-cultural Education) online courses for U.S. high school students for Spring 2019  Some scholarship funds are available to offset costs. For more info see: Application Deadline: October 15th: China Scholars Program (China) to be held late January to late May 2019 (https://spice.fsi.stanford.edu/fellowship/china-scholars-program)

Our focus today: Topics: 你做什么工作? common professions

We focused on learning how to describe family members’ professions and learn how to ask someone’s professions. We learn how to say the following professions:

Today, we used bingo sheet to review the vocabularies from L2D2. We practiced speaking the dialogues from L2D2. Watched the DVD on L2D2’s dialogue. We completed one-on-one flashcard quiz today.

I checked your flash card homework today. We watched a documentary on Chinese family (14 min.) and went over the vocabulary on L2D2.

L2D2 Flash card quiz on Wednesday. 

L2D2 Character worksheets due on Wednesday too. (please write the vocabulary relating to each character on the margin: For example, 律师,lǜshī , lawyer.)

Welcome back to school!  It was great meeting you all yesterday!  It is my hope that this semester we will all commit ourselves to a successful school year! We will all work hard together to have a meaningful and excellent learning experience.

Create flash cards for handouts (on Modern Chinese Unit 1 Lesson 1 Vocabulary. Before class:

  1. HW: Create the set of vocabulary flash cards before attending class (10 points). Bring it to class.
  2. Review them and know how to 1) recognize the characters/vocabulary (Flash card quiz on Modern Chinese L1 D1 on Wednesday).
  3. Written Vocabulary Quiz on Modern Chinese L1D1 on Thursday.
