Grammar 1: (le) to indicate change

了 is a particle used a the end of a sentence to indicate a changed situation.

  1. I am hungry (now).
  • I am full (now)
  • I am thirsty (now).

Translate:  

  • A: Have you eaten?

Translate:  

B1: yes, I have eaten!

B2: No, I haven’t eaten yet.

Grammar 2: (xiǎng)

In Chinese, the character 想 (xiǎng) is an auxiliary verb that can be used to express “would like to”.

It’s similar to 要 (yào), but 想 is more polite and reserved, while 要 is more demanding and forceful.         

  1. Do you like to eat apples?

Translate:

  • Would you like to eat apples?

Translate:

  • A: Would you like to drink coke? (use 想不想)

Translate:

B: I don’t want to drink coke, I would like to drink water.

Grammar 3: 吧 ba—

吧 can be used at the end of a declarative sentence to soften the tone. It indicates the statement is a suggestion or request.

A: Let’s go to school!

B: Let’s go to Starbuck to drink some coffee (星巴克)

C. Let’s go to your house!
