去 qù + Verb
It means “to go to do an activity.” A location may also be added after 去 to specify the location where the activity takes place.
- Let’s go and eat Chinese food!
- Let’s eat at a French restaurant tonight!
Language Notes 12.2
太[adj.]了Tài 。。。le : This construction is an emphatic statement meaning “too…” or “so…”
The word 太 indicates an extraordinary quantity/intensity.
- This Japanese restaurant is so good!
- This bowl of soup is so tasty!
- The dumplings in this Chinese restaurant are so delicious!
- This school is so small. There are only 50 students there. (only: 只 Zhǐ)
- This drink is too expensive! (expensive 贵 guì)
Language Notes 12.3
好 + Verb =Adjective
When 好 is used before a verb, it provides the context that something is good and creates an adjective with the word. For example, 好+吃 (eat)translates literally to “Good to eat” which means “delicious”
- Steam buns are delicious.
- Watermelon vegetable Juice is very tasty!
- His older brother is very good-looking.
Language Notes 12.4 了 le
In lesson 11, we learned how to use 了 to express a change of state or a new situation. The 了 particle is also used to indicate that something has taken place or that an action has been completed. This 了can go at the end of a statement or after the verb. If a quantity is mentioned (e.g., “two glasses of coke 两杯可乐), then 了 must go after the verb.
- I drank five glasses of soda yesterday!
- I ate 5 apples!
- After eating dinner, you can eat ice cream!
